Pop Series, the inspiration
Sometimes I am asked: what does it mean? People are often looking a these anthropomorphic works of mine: a tigers head on an old school tattooed sailor, Chewbacca as a German General.
My answer is simple: I make this work because it's fun to do so. Because they crack me up while making them. I make them because I enjoy creating, and creating need not be a complicated act.
This work is a playground, it does not attempt to reinvent the wheel, or make any particular statement. Other artists have similar work which I don't mind at all. This work is not meant to be original per se.
This series of Pop Portraits simply is fun. I have scoured my memory for those stand out characters in pop cuture and commerorated them in this series of work. I am a child of the 80's, I think that becomes clear. My influences: Star Wars, 80's B-boy culture, WWF wrestlers.
They are meant to be nothing but silly, nothing but enjoyed. Sometimes art really should be that uncomplicated. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did making them.
